Noncompliance with the national lockdown regulations and irresponsible behaviour will deepen the crisis of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic as the country heads towards the peak of infections, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday.

“The storm is upon us,” Ramaphosa said, adding that in order to strengthen the country’s response, the level three lockdown restrictions would be retained but with new additional measures including the ban on the sale, distribution and dispensing of alcohol.

He said the healthcare system was evidently burdened with alcohol injuries that could be avoided and therefore alcohol sales were suspended with immediate effect.
