A quarter of South African households are at risk of hunger or are experiencing hunger, yet a third of all the food produced in the country – worth about about R61.5 billion – ends up as waste.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), an international non-governmental organisation that works in the field of wilderness preservation and the reduction of human impact on the environment, 10 million tonnes of food ends up as waste in South Africa.
