The City of Johannesburg, a hung municipality governed by an ANC-led coalition, is in a race against time to pass its budget, having been given a momentary reprieve by the Gauteng provincial government.

The city has been given until Friday to pass its budget. Should it fail to do so, the metro will join its neighbour Pretoria in being placed under administration.
