The management of Imbabala Coal Mine in Mpumalanga offered a paltry R600 000 to rehabilitate the environment when its lifespan ended.

Fourteen years after Imbabala left the site in Wesselton township near Ermelo, the department of mineral resources and energy assessed the cost of rehabilitating the area and found it to be R450 million – 750 times more than the amount it received as security when it gave the company its mining licence in 2005.
