New law protects consumers’ personal information

Consumers can now institute civil claims if they suffer damages as a result of a company or organisation abusing their personal information, or failing to adequately protect them against cyber criminals.

This is in terms of the Protection of Personal Information Act, which finally came into effect on July 1.
