This year’s Youth Day marked 46 years since the 1976 student uprisings when thousands of learners took to the streets to protest against the apartheid government’s usage of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in Soweto schools.

President Cyril Ramaphosa used his address in Mthatha on Thursday to urge the youth to rally together to confront and overcome the massive challenges facing the country.

He said:
The fact that millions of young people are not employed, education or training is the greatest challenge facing our country today. As we rebuild from the Covid-19 pandemic, we, therefore, remain focused on growing our economy and creating jobs.
Ramaphosa added that the youth should be inspired by the 1976 generation “to look beyond their immediate circumstances and pursue their hopes and dreams”.
