The defence department has canned its plans to spend nearly R400 million in an emergency procurement that would have seen it buying ventilators, intensive care unit (ICU) beds and containers from a company which is less than two months old.

The about-turn follows an enquiry from City Press and some oversight bodies this week after Safepod was able to meet the express deadline to supply the department with much-needed mobile quarantine sites. The emergency procurement was advertised and closed within a day, leaving many service providers out of the race.
