“When journalists lose their jobs, it does not only affect them as individuals and the media companies. It also impacts on the country’s access to information,” said Kate Skinner, executive director at the SA National Editors Forum (Sanef).

Skinner’s comments come after Sanef announced a relief fund for journalists who have “lost their livelihoods as a direct result of the Covid-19 coronavirus national disaster,” it said in a statement.

The fund, to which MTN contributed R500 000, aims to “assist those in dire need with a small donation to purchase necessities such as food and clothing” and is only applicable to “freelance, contract or permanently employed journalists who have been retrenched or had their contracts cancelled since the implementation of the national lockdown on March 26”.
