Think-tank university programmes, research staff and students will feel the pinch next year due to budget cuts at an independent statutory body tasked to promote research.

City Press learnt from sources within the higher education sector that students and universities would be negatively affected next year because of budget cuts at the National Research Foundation (NRF).

Government, sources told City Press, had been cutting budgets for departments including that of higher education, science and innovation to go to the R500 billion Covid-19 coronavirus relief fund.
