Taxi shutdown: ‘Fearful’ commuters left stranded

It is now just after 7pm. The sound of taxi drivers, commuters, and loud hooters that usually fill the Noord Taxi Rank in Johannesburg are absent.

While the usually buzzing taxi rank stands empty with only a handful of taxis in sight, hopeful commuters who are making their way back from work stand silently in queues in anticipation of any taxi to get them home.

One such hopeful is Khulekani Khathi (56) who resides in Diepkloof, Soweto, and has to travel to Edenvale for work.
