Close relatives and friends will pay their last respects to gospel legend Deborah Fraser at a memorial service to held at the House of Treasures Ministries in Johannesburg on Thursday.
Fraser, who passed away on Sunday morning after a short illness, will be laid to rest in Durban on Saturday.
News of her passing sent shock waves across the country with gospel star Rebecca Malope describing Fraser’s music as soothing and comforting.
Malope said:
“I could not believe it ... such a young and gifted woman of God. I knew she had sugar diabetes. My mother also suffered from the illness and I know it is a difficult illness to live with.”
Fraser’s family said she passed on in the presence of close friends and relatives.
“It is with deep sadness to inform you of the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt and friend, and gospel musician, Deborah Fraser following a short illness. She passed on Sunday after midday, in the presence of her family and friends,” the family said in a statement.
Fraser, who was featured in the City Press Mother’s Day special a fortnight ago, revealed that she was wheelchair-bound after being diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure.

Internationally acclaimed musician and her daughter-in-law Nomcebo Zikode took to her Instagram with a picture of Fraser standing next to her and captioned it:
The Siyakhothama hitmaker vomited and then collapsed on her way to an event in Klerksdorp in the North West in February. She was admitted at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto for a month.
Fraser began her music career in 1985 as a backing singer. She recorded her first album Abanye Bayombona in 2000. She has become a household name and the Christian Leadership Academy conferred an honorary PhD in sacred music last year.
