A few weeks ago, we ran an article about the affordability, or lack thereof, of medical aid schemes. Many readers were surprised to discover that they qualified for medical tax credits if they belonged to a medical scheme.

We have always had a tax benefit for contributions to a medical aid scheme. In 2012, the SA Revenue Service (Sars) changed this from a tax deduction to a medical scheme fee tax credit.
