The gang rape of eight women in Krugersdorp on Friday morning has exposed the ANC’s struggle to deal with issues facing women since the dawn of democracy in 1994.

Gwen Ramokgopa, the party’s national gender reference task team leader at the party’s sixth policy conference, which is under way at Nasrec, south of Johannesburg, used the incident to present a report that painted a dark picture of how women were still being marginalised, and suffering injustices and abuse of various kinds.
