Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Anele Ngcongca enjoyed cult hero status at Jupiler Pro League club Genk, where he spent eight years.
This week, the club confirmed that it would honour Ngcongca posthumously by retiring the number 16 jersey after the 33-year-old was tragically killed in a car accident on Monday morning near Mtunzini in KwaZulu-Natal.
In an interview with City Press in June, Ngcongca spoke about how he had been in contact with Genk recently and of his desire to return to Belgium to give back to the club where he made more than 200 appearances between 2007 and 2015.
He also shared his photo album of his time with the club – one of the 27 pictures was this one celebrating their league triumph in 2011 with a Genk supporter.
Ngcongca was on the verge of joining AmaZulu in Durban on loan from Sundowns when he died.
He’ll be buried in Gugulethu, Cape Town, on Thursday.
