Lesego Sebetlela won R100 000 for being player of the tournament during the recently concluded ABC Motsepe League.
The former University of Johannesburg (UJ) player joined MM Platinum in July last year and won the league in June during a tense final.
Sebetlela will now play in the PSL’s new season for Sekhukhune United FC. MM Platinum graduated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The 22-year-old said:
The player from Dobsonville, Soweto, is a logistics management graduate and joined UJ Football Under-17 in 2017, where he was promoted to the first team after just three months.
He joined Highlands Park in 2019 but the club’s PSL status was then sold and he returned to UJ last year, and later left for MM Platinum.
“Playing for MM Platinum wasn’t easy at first, but after a few months with them, I started to understand how they played and my confidence grew there. They believed in me when I thought all hope was lost, and for that, I’ll forever consider them as my family.”
His coaches describe him as a good defender who is comfortable with the ball. They say he is an asset because he is a left-footed centre back.

Founder of the league Patrice Motsepe attended the play-off finals in Potchefstroom and handed over the prize money.
“Being the winner of the play-offs is by far my greatest achievement. Winning that final opened so many doors for me.”
Sebetlela started his career at age 13, playing for Midas Football Academy. He was scouted by Augusto Palacios two years later, joining the Orlando Pirates Development Team from the age of 15 to 17.
“When I was 17, I left Pirates because of lack of game time and decided to focus on school. That’s when I joined UJ Under-19. The UJ coaching staff contributed to my growth.” He said:
