In an unexpected speech during the commission of inquiry into state capture this week, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo made the following remarks: “When there are elections, I’m sure every political party will tell the voters that ‘the people come first’. But we need to see this in action. We don’t need speeches about how people say they are committed to fighting corruption.”

Zondo was speaking after evidence given by former Passenger Rail Agency of SA board chairperson Popo Molefe, who had spoken at length about how he tried to sensitise several institutions, including Parliament and the leadership of the governing ANC, to massive corruption happening at the entity.
