Inequality is a deep fissure in the social fabric of our country. At its core is race-based inequality, where, after 26 years of democracy, the white minority is still the primary beneficiary of economic activity and reward.
Compounding this, and at the core of it, is the deeply entrenched privilege of South African men. That patriarchy underpins every facet of our lives cannot be disputed – from its most toxic expression in gender-based violence and femicide to the exclusion of women in the corporate boardroom.
The economic exclusion of women and the gender pay gap prevalent in the workplace are just another aspect of patriarchal violence.
