The department of basic education has published for comment the proposed amendments to the Regulations Relating to Minimum Norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure (Norms).

The proposed amendments will denude the Norms of accountability mechanisms, rendering them toothless and ineffective. Even more disturbing is that this development is just another round of several surreptitious and concerted attempts by the department to avoid its constitutional obligation to provide safe and decent school infrastructure.
