As we approach Mandela Day on July 18, the mood in the country is sombre. Even though there is a glimmer of hope as we connect with friends and families after Covid-19, we do so with apprehension as the country plunges into more chaos.

It seems we can’t catch a break: from corruption and rising inequality to load shedding and a steep increase in the cost of living. While some of these aspects of life are beyond anyone’s control, others point to a vacuum in leadership in all spheres of society.
