A necessary debate has been raging regarding the proposed changes to the names of places and structures, which are throwbacks to colonialism, as initiated by the Eastern Cape Provincial Geographic Names Committee.

For the city of East London – eMonti – which is located within the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, the main motivation for the change of this and other colonial names was set forth by mayor Xola Pakati.
