Last weekend Premier Job Mokgoro installed Mahumapelo’s ally Mmoloki Cwaile as the new MEC in the crucial portfolio of cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs. The post became vacant when Gordon Kegakilwe died earlier this year due to a Covid-19-related illness.

That Cwaile’s appointment has already been subjected to an internal challenge at the ANC provincial headquarters in Gertrude Mphekwa House is testimony to the significance of the deployment. On Sunday Sanco in the province called for Luthuli House to intervene, saying there were attempts to “coerce” Mokgoro to reverse Cwaile’s appointment.
