Some years ago, I was selected to represent my region at a national indoor cricket tournament in Cape Town. It was the first time I had earned provincial colours for a sport – after many attempts in other sports – and I was superexcited and proud.

On the eve of the tournament, we were in a room with a few other players from various other age groups, talking kak and getting to know each other.
