To assert that South Africa is a deeply divided society with the worse levels of inequalities in the world is not exaggeration. This structural inequality has got a racial dimension in that a large majority of poor people are black.

While the chronic inequalities have always been visible throughout the length and breath of our country, the arrival of the Covid-19 coronavirus on our shores has put a spotlight on how much our society has neglected the plight of poor people.
