In the almost two years since the Protection of Personal Information Act (Popia) came into force, no offender has yet been charged, although South Africans are still harassed almost daily by unsolicited calls from telemarketers. The national Information Regulator has received more than 1 400 complaints since the act’s inception.

The regulator, led by Pansy Tlakula, oversees compliance with Popia, as well as the Promotion of Access to Information Act (Paia).
