At the turn of the 21st century, many nations increasingly became citizens of the international community. Given that this was a period when many developing democracies were increasingly autonomous in their participation with a globalised world, doing so was important.

However, can the advancements made in decentralising state power, free trade and global interaction be preserved despite the growing push for protectionism in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic?
