It was 10 in the morning and Istodlwana Tavern was already like an upturned beehive, with people – most of them between the ages of 18 and 30 – doing battle against green and brown bottles.

Most of them donned ANC T-shirts and were joyfully singing struggle songs in between huge gulps from their bottles.
