This year started with the usual excitement for some, while others carried over the burdens of the previous year. Then, just three months into the new year, our lives changed.

In certain instances, we all became more equal, living in the shadow of death regardless of our social and economic standing. But, at the same time, we became even more unequal when the deadly Covid-19 pandemic exposed the levels of inequality in South Africa.
