The dead and alive Thabo Bester joins the list of recalcitrant criminals who, in addition to having committed crimes for which they were sentenced, continue to be a headache to government and society.

Another escape master was Ananias Mathe, a convicted rapist who caused major problems as he evaded officers multiple times in his quest for freedom. Mathe, once dubbed Houdini, escaped from Kgosi Mampuru C-Max Prison in Pretoria, which is regarded as a super prison.
