A friend once caused a bit of a kerfuffle when he mischievously remarked during a conversation that the Filipino rebel group Abu Sayyaf, which had gained infamy when it took South Africans Monique and Callie Strydom hostage for four months in 2000, was the second-most useless guerilla army in modern history.

When asked by those present who Abu Sayyaf was playing second fiddle to in these prestigious stakes, he calmly responded: "MK, of course". This did not go down very well, as there were some who still had great reverence for Umkhonto weSizwe, the erstwhile military wing of the ANC.
