To get some context regarding how long Nzimande had been the SACP’s general secretary, you have to remember that, in 1998, the year he was elected, Bafana Bafana qualified for the World Cup with the likes of the late Shoes Moshoeu and Phil Masinga. In that same year, acting president Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi had a rush of hot blood to his head and ordered the SA National Defence Force into Lesotho, where the ill-prepared troops were whipped by that country’s elementary army.
