Many may have missed the milestone that this week marked 20 years since then US president George Bush and then British prime minister Tony Blair used a big, bald lie to lead the world into a war whose bloody consequences we live with to this day.

Before the US, the UK and other allied nations kicked off their invasion of Iraq on March 20 2003, a veritable mass of lies had been built up over 18 months to justify the inevitable military action. In the aftermath of the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks on US installations and landmarks, politicians and security officials – aided by “independent” experts – began drawing a dotted line between Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
