The uncertainty surrounding whether the Springboks will play in this year’s Rugby Championship, and the subsequent speculation about their playing in an eight-nation tournament in the northern hemisphere instead, has left the current world champions in something of a no-man’s land.

One would imagine the playing future of the reigning world champions would long have been secured, regardless of the fact that this Covid-19 ravaged year is nothing if not defined by its many moving parts, but here we are with no confirmation either way for competitions pencilled to begin on November 7 (Rugby Championship) and a week later (the Eight Nations).
