In a statement this week, the government said Maseko was shot by “unknown criminals”, but pro-democracy groups smell a rat in the activist’s death. Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation.

Online independent publication Swaziland News reported that there had been a convoy of police officers after Maseko was shot, but the police allegedly refused to help chase the alleged killers' getaway vehicle. Instead, they allegedly told Maseko’s relative that he must chase the car himself and give them its registration number.
