Limpopo’s Sekhukhune district, which has suffered a loss of about R44 million allegedly engineered internally by officials in cahoots with service providers, has thwarted another R26 million irregular deal.

Municipal officials had issued appointment letters to service providers to drill boreholes without following tender procedures but chief finance officer (CFO) Colbert Mufamadi saved the day by refusing to sign the appointments last week.

This means that these companies would have been irregularly appointed for R26 million without an open bidding process. The officials hurriedly made the appointments in order to conclude the 2019/2020 financial year and avoid risking the unused budget being forfeited back to Treasury.
