Pupils at Kagiso Senior Secondary School in the West Rand have been asked to leave class early on Friday after a teacher allegedly shot and killed a knife-wielding man allegedly about to stab the principal.

Chaos erupted during class when the man apparently found his way to the principal and attempted to stab him.

One teary pupil said:

No one knows where the teacher came from. But one second later, the man was dead.

It is understood the man was not a pupil at the school and may have been accompanied by several other boys, who ran from the scene when the gun was fired.

Kagiso township is riddled with unemployed youth. Many are known to fall into the clutches of crime and drug abuse.

City Press understands that the parents of the children are being contacted to arrange for counselling.

Some pupils could be seen sitting silently in small groups outside the school's premises, reeling in shock after the incident.

Teachers stood behind closed gates, waiting for law enforcement officials to investigate the deadly shooting on school grounds.

This is a developing story.
