At the corner of Canehaven Drive and JG Champion Street in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, cars moved freely on Thursday afternoon. A year ago at this intersection, Siyabonga Ncobela almost lost his life.

Amid the looting and violence of last year’s unrest, which saw much devastation, chaos had erupted and the remnants of burnt cars were still smouldering – including Ncobela’s bakkie.
