Get clever with your cash, take part in this year’s Money Smart Week activities

From learning about savings, pension funds, insurance and retirement investments to how to earn compound interest without being scammed, Money Smart Week is aimed at educating South Africans about how to become smarter with their money.

Money Smart Week, a financial education campaign aimed at motivating and empowering South Africans to become more educated about their finances, runs from March 23-28 at a venue near you.

An initiative of the National Consumer Financial Education Committee, it is championed by the National Treasury. The campaign sees organisations which include South African companies or businesses that offers a financial product or service or any organisation with an interest in financial literacy, conduct financial education projects and programmes throughout South Africa during the week.

Any organisation with an interest in financial literacy can apply to host an educational event or programme during Money Smart Week. All applications will be vetted according to a criteria set by the committee.

“One financially literate person in a home can influence an entire generation. This campaign is about educating South Africans that financial education is accessible and readily available to all,” said Lyndwill Clarke, head of consumer education at the Financial Sector Conduct Authority.

Research conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council in 2017 found that although 60% of South Africans kept a close watch over their finances, nearly half did not manage to save at all and an alarming 42% of the adult population had no long-term savings.

With a worsening economy, increased unemployment and an increase in people’s debt, the time really is now to become more educated about your finances.
