In case you are living in an advert free world, November 27 is Black Friday, which is followed by Cyber Monday on November 30. These are concepts that we’ve inherited from the US that are typically marked by retailers – online and in our malls – heavily discounting their products. Last year, South Africans spent about R6 billion on Black Friday alone.

I have always treated Black Friday with caution. Telling people that they are “saving” money by spending more has never made sense to me. Scenes of people fighting each other in stores to get the last item on the shelf must be the ultimate representation of our obsession with consumerism.
