The chaotic scenes that characterised the ANC provincial conference in the Free State on Friday reflected deep tension and division within the party.

While police had to use rubber bullets to prevent delegates from entering the conference venue, some delegates overturned chairs at the registration centre at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.
