After an unsuccessful bid to dethrone Magashule in 2012, the newly elected chairperson, Mxolisi Dukwana, languished in the political wilderness for six years.

He only returned to active politics after being appointed as convenor of the interim provincial committee (IPC) that was appointed to steer the ship when a vacuum was created after the Supreme Court of Appeal declared the conference that elected Magashule’s close ally Sam Mashinini as the provincial chairperson in 2021 unlawful and invalid.
