Safa has resolved to scrap the remaining 486 league games in the ABC Motsepe League and go straight to the promotional play-offs with the teams at the top of the table.

The association has suffered a major headache coming up with a solution on how to complete the remaining games of the 2019/20 season across its nine structures, which are made of 16 clubs per stream.

Clubs in the amateur league simply cannot afford the costs associated with playing games in a biologically safe environment.

Safa needs to promote two teams to the first division – the GladAfrica Championship – in time for the new season, which starts later this month.

It appears that Safa and the PSL have reached a compromise regarding the start of the first division season. Safa said the play-offs must be completed by November 7, which means the two promoted sides could be introduced into the league later.

“Non-professional football was forced to stop before the matches could be finished in March 2020. There is a need for Safa to promote the two teams which will participate in the GladAfrica championships in the 2020/21 season.

“Also the registration period of players in the National Soccer League is expected to close on November 30 2020,” Safa acting chief executive Tebogo Motlanthe said in a statement on Thursday.

“Safa has to promote and not deny the opportunity to the teams which must be promoted to the GladAfrica Championship. The two promoted teams must be afforded enough opportunity to register and add more quality players for sustainability in the professional ranks.

“The two teams must be provided with enough time to prepare for the resumption of the GladAfrica championships.”

Safa could face serious backlash for its decision, especially from the sides that are only a few points adrift of the table-topping teams.

In the Eastern Cape and Free State, for instance, the top two teams are separated by only one point.

Leaders Bizana Pondo Chiefs have 47 points, while Spear of the Nation are on 46 points in the Eastern Cape.

In the Free State, Mangaung Unite have 59 points, while Super Eagles are on 58.
