Mamelodi Sundowns had had a bright start to 2021 after they defeated fellow title contenders Orlando Pirates 1-0 on Saturday.

The two title rivals opened the New Year with a titanic clash at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. A scramble inside the box led to the first goal as defender Brian Onyango bundled the ball over the line in the 35th minute.

It was Bucs’ first loss of the season following an impressive run where they also lifted the MTN8 title.
