Apart from his distinctive bald head, South African referee Victor Gomes is mostly recognised on the field by a popped-up shirt collar and his favourite cleats, the vintage Adidas Copa Mundial boots.

His whistle always matches the colour of his match-day shirt. The 39-year-old from south of Johannesburg also sports a tattoo on his neck that says Fair Play. But what has also caught the eye is that, wherever Gomes is assigned, one of his assistants has usually been Zakhele Siwela (39), the unassuming match official from Alexandra in Johannesburg.
