In the vapour trail he left in his wake at the ongoing Fina World Cup Series (short course) over the past fortnight – a haul of nine golds and a silver medal, which has seen him jump to the top of the standings at the halfway stage of the competition, with the Qatar and Kazan legs left, and world junior records in the 200m individual medley, as well as the 200m and 400m freestyle events – the 18-year-old declared that it was a “relief” to finally be putting in such staggering performances.
