Celebrated ‘King of Puns’ and radio broadcaster Sol Phenduka said he was not happy with his performance on Comedy Central’s special, the Roast of Khanyi Mbau, stating that he only had two days to prepare.

However, fans of Sol Phenduka, given name, Solomzi Thandubuntu Phenduka, have lauded the star who is currently at the peak of his career juggling a brand-new breakfast show on Kaya 959, deejaying bookings abroad and a flourishing YouTube show, Podcast and Chill with MacG.

“The roast was okay. I saw that I have been trending for the last two days. I was not 100% happy with my delivery. The script was great and all, but it all happened too quickly for me.”

Phenduka explained:

I got roped in as the last person on the roast, so I was extremely late.

The famed broadcaster was on a tour abroad when he found out that he was needed to join the panel of the roast of Khanyi Mbau, which was broadcast on Monday on Comedy Central and Showmax.

Other panellists included radio hosts Thabo ‘Tbo’ Touch, Selby ‘Selbeyonce’ Mkhize, rappers Nadia Nakai and Youngsta CPT, as well as comedians Celeste Ntuli, John Vlismas, veteran actor Sello Maake Ka Ncube and host Mpho Popps Modikoane.

“I found out when I was out of the country that they wanted me for the roast. I landed and the roast happened after two days. I mean, it was fun and the roast was very successful. Everybody was funny and everybody did their part, and it was very successful. We were all there for Khanyi.”

He said:

We celebrated her in the best way possible. It was, overall, a success and a great opportunity as well.

Phenduka has been the new host of the Kaya 959 breakfast show along with seasoned broadcaster Dineo Ranaka from the beginning of July.

The star, who started his radio career at YFM before joining 5FM as a host and traffic reporter, made a comeback when he joined Podcast and Chill with MacG.

He said that even though it was premature to speak on his show on Kaya 959, he was excited.

“It has been a month with a lot of feedback, but a month is nothing, especially for a breakfast show. It takes a while to finally get in the groove and we are getting in the grove of it. The first month was exciting, interacting with Kaya listeners. It has been beautiful and they have been welcoming. The station itself, the colleagues, it is great.”

Phenduka has also called out fans who have been accusing Ranaka of being toxic towards him, and like Ranaka, he describes their relationship as akin to that of siblings.

“My work environment is not toxic. I know it comes from a good place. Of course, people are expecting Sol from the podcast but it is a news show, a new environment and a new team.” Phenduka said:

It is also Dineo’s first time hosting a breakfast team, I come from a podcast environment and we are still finding our vibe.

He added: “There is also this thing that we always talk about on the podcast. Some people who are my fans who have not even listened to the whole show and only seen clips of the show then say that Sol is being bullied or that I look unhappy or that the relationship is toxic. No one complains that on the podcast, MacG is the main host, and on radio, they want me to be the main host. I get that it comes from a place of love, but it should not go as far as bashing other people.”
