As September 24 approaches, many South Africans are planning to mark Heritage Day by cooking and serving food that reflects their roots.
Whether that is a braai in Benoni, Gauteng, or thongolifha in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, we are what we eat.
This year, Heritage Day is happening amid unprecedented poverty and a huge hunger crisis. Far from celebrating in style, many South Africans will be going without food.
In recognition of our delicious diversity and in solidarity with those who fight hunger every day, Chefs with Compassion are organising the Heritage Food Challenge.
Established at the start of the national lockdown in March, Chefs with Compassion is a network of waste warriors and professional chefs who have worked together to provide meals for those in need. Wherever possible, they work with rescued and/or surplus supplies.
Since March, the chefs have provided more than 800 000 meals to the most vulnerable in our society. Even using rescued or surplus ingredients, it’s an expensive undertaking as it costs about R10 to feed a hungry person for a day.
On September 12, Chefs with Compassion started challenging celebrities, corporations and ordinary men, women and children across South Africa to share a video of themselves holding a plate of food that speaks to their heritage – and then challenge their loved ones, friends, colleagues and others to do the same.
The price of sharing your heritage food with the world via the Chefs with Compassion social media pages is the cost of feeding a hungry person – R10.
Pay R10 into the Chefs with Compassion bank account via chefswithcompassion.org.za/donate-now/ and you will receive a link to a closed Facebook group where you can upload your video or picture of your food favourite. Use the hashtags #OurFood and #HeritageDayChallenge. Challenge everyone within your circle to do the same! Upload your picture or video and tag the people or companies you are challenging.
