The River wins big at Royalty Soapie Awards

One Magic soapie The River walked away as the biggest winner of the night at the annual Royalty Soapie Awards on Saturday night.  

The popular soapie, which has announced that it will wrap up production for good at the end of the current season, took home five awards, including outstanding onscreen couple for seasoned actors Sindi Dlathu and Hlomla Dandala. It also scooped the outstanding directing team award.

Lunathi Mampofu won two awards: outstanding supporting actress and viewer's choice: best actress for her portrayal of Emma.

The event was held at The Galleria in Kramerville, Johannesburg. Other winners on the night included Mzansi Magic soapie Gomora and e.tv soapie House of Zwide, which walked away with four awards each.  

Gomora actress Katlego Danke was given the outstanding lead actress award, while former Generations castmate Vusi Kunene walked away with the outstanding lead actor award for his role in House of Zwide.

Legendary actress Connie Chiume was honoured with a lifetime achievement award, while executive producer Mfundi Vundla won the trailblazer of the year award. 

This was the sixth edition of the awards show. Tourism SA who participated by adding the Pan-African award category to the mix.  

Funder and CEO of the awards Winnie Ntshaba said:

Our strategic collaboration with Tourism SA is significant as it buoys our local talent and elevates them on the international stage. The soapies are filmed locally, showcasing South Africa’s beautiful landscapes, infrastructure and talent.

She added: "The past six years have been a fantastic journey, a dream coming to fruition. As an actress, I am \excited about a new relationship that will bring inclusion of the Pan-African actors, a platform where we celebrate the hard work of individuals behind the soapie industry across Africa."
