Countries that have witnessed coups and counter-coups have seen their democratic and economic prospects jeopardised.
Attempted coups averaged four a year between 1960 and 2000, although this had reduced to two a year in the two decades up to 2019. But the threat of coups remains a challenge for many African democracies. Most African countries, since their independence from colonisers, have battled with the menace of military coups.
