We sat on the edge of our collective seats, scrutinising every decision by the match officials, and again realised that we would be denied victory when such obvious blunders were committed. English players obstructing play, multiple offsides and playing the ball while on the ground … It got so bad that our courageous and soft-spoken captain had to point out the obvious to the referee: more than six defensive penalties had been given against the English team in the danger zone. The list of deliberate errors is too long to recount here, but still, we celebrate.

Former president Nelson Mandela understood the herculean task of crafting South Africanism from the many divisions and fractures in this nation, as he knew that greatness escapes the divided.
