VOICES

Listen, Cyril – I’m tired, man. I’m not sure how much longer I can put up with your pseudo prohibition or this curfew.

I’m a grown ass man, 10pm used to be when I left the house to go out. I’m in my prime and you’re telling me I can only buy booze between Monday and Thursday from 10am to 5pm? Another really well-thought-out plan, seeing as so many of us finish work at 5pm.

Garages don’t even pretend to respect your curfew. I guarantee that if you need something from the store at a service station after curfew, they’ll serve you. Why shouldn’t they, I’m a paying customer?

We’re sitting on day 536 of this lockdown and it’s time for you and your people to put a W (win) on the board for the country. All you’ve done successfully so far, Cyril, is catch a string of Ls (losses).

An outbreak is reported in China and it ravages Italy. Instead of locking things down then, you chilled. First L. Then some rich folks who went skiing bring the virus home because you still thought everything was cool, that’s another L. Then you got on the mic and said something about a three-week lockdown and you had the army administer physical education on the streets … a major L.

You allowed vaccine trials to be done here, but when the vaccine was ready, somehow we were nowhere near the front of the line. Yep, another L.

You see what I’m saying, Cyril? You haven’t been doing well at all.

You know what needs to be done now. You need to open things up and begin this whole vaccine medical pass

There is yet another variant, C.1.2, doing the rounds and I bet you’re still allowing people from where that strain is rampant to visit our shores.

South Africa was red-listed almost everywhere and yet we kept our borders open.

You know what needs to be done now. You need to open things up and begin this whole vaccine medical pass. It is an inevitability.

If people would rather not get the jab, that’s fine, Cyril. Let them go and live by the mountains or something. They can switch to a plant-based diet and do their shopping in the bushes.

I don’t need another sombre “family meeting”; I need you to lead

The rest of us are trying to get this herd immunity thing right. Far richer nations are picking up the pieces and moving forward with life.

I’m certain that if unvaccinated people are barred from going into malls, they’ll get the jab. You need to think of the businesses that no longer exist and the ones hanging on by a thread. You ever looked in the face of a bar manager at 9.30pm as they call for last rounds?

You ever seen a family business being packed up after 20 years in operation?

Cyril, you need at least one victory in this pandemic and, as a country, we need to start moving past this.

I don’t need another sombre “family meeting”; I need you to lead.
